broken was back to 1966. major heat wave tomorrow. it could stick around for some time. we'll have details coming up in just a little while. >> thanks, anthony. new information on the boston marathon bombing investigation. tonight nbc news is reporting the surviving suspect is communicating with investigators with handwritten responses. 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev is unable to speak because of a throat wound. nbc news's pete williams says the suspect is being questioned for brief periods. we don't yet know what he's telling investigators through those written messages. we're also learning the justice department will not file charges against him today as previously thought. that may happen tomorrow. also in boston today, many people stopped to remember the victims and reflect on what has been an overwhelming week in their city. nbc bay area's jay gray has been following the bombings and the aftermath. he has the latest. >> reporter: good evening. investigators continue to clear out areas inside the crime scene, and as more of this city

now begins to open, many today were drawn here to the area near egs whe est where it happened ♪ >> reporter: sometimes there's a strength in simply being together. >> people are going to have to band together and be with their loved ones and work through it by talking and feeling. >> reporter: hundreds from different faiths gathered near the blast site this morning, some whose churches were damaged in the attack, still resilient but also on sunday, pausing to reflect. >> it was shock. it was anger. it was sadness. because this is our city. you don't hurt our city. ♪ >> reporter: pictures of the victims framed an emotional mass at the cathedral of the holy cross today. >> this week we are all scattered in the pain and horror of the senseless violence perpetrated on patriots day. >> reporter: and now as they come back with investigators finishing their work, the city

is preparing for the crime tape and barricades to come down along boyleston street. >> now, today, it's time to move forward. >> reporter: there is still heavy security at beth israel deacon esz hospital where their thon bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev is in serious but stable condition. investigators say one of his most severe injuries, a throat wound, that's limited his ability to speak, could be the result of a suicide attempt before he was captured. we're also learning more now about what tsarnaev did in the days just before the attack. witnesses say he returned to classes at the university of massachusetts dartmouth, even attending parties before he disappeared on thursday. >> just weird that he came back after, like, the bombings and then people saw him here. i don't know why he would do that. >> reporter: it's a question that so many in this grieving community and across the country are asking right now. why? jay gray, nbc news, boston. >> as jay mentioned, hundreds gathered at the boston marathon

finish line today to pay their respects. tomorrow the governor of massachusetts is asking people across the state to observe a moment of silence at the time that first bomb went off. that would be 2:50 in the afternoon. it will be followed by the ringing of the bells in boston and elsewhere throughout massachusetts. as accused marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev recovers in a boston hospital, washington is debating how to handle his prosecution. while the obama administration has agreed to decllay a readingf the miranda rights, the administration is not going along with republicans who are calling for a change in the prosecution play book. >> this man in my view should be designated as a potential enemy combatant and we should be allowed to question him for intelligence gathering purposes. >> literally hundreds of terrorists, those accused of terrorism, have been successfully prosecuted and imprisoned in the united states using the same process that's being used in this case in boston. >> at the same time, lawmakers want to know a lot more about the suspect's dead brother,

tamerlan tsarnaev traveled to russia for six months last year after he was brought to the attention of the fbi as a possible islamist extremist. this has added a sharp new angle to the debate over immigration reform. we have new video to share with you tonight. this is home video obtained by nbc news showing surviving bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev competing in a wrestling match in 2009. he's the wrestler in the black uniform there. he competed in the 112-pound weight class in this massachusetts tournament four years ago. stay with us for continuing coverage of the boston bombing investigation. right now on nbcbayarea.com there's newly released helicopter video of the momenting leading up to the suspect's arrest. homicide investigators are at the scene of what they're calling an undetermined death. the victim is a woman in her 50s who was found at 3:00 this morning by a neighbor. she was lying in a pool of blood in her driveway on silver leaf drive near east 14th street and

ashland avenue. as of just two hours ago the street was still blocked off. investigators were still trying to piece together what happened. a man who lives a few doors down told us everyone who lives in the neighborhood belongs to a homeowners association, and the area is regularly patrolled by security. he was shocked to learn of his neighbor's death. >> yes. it's a nice lady. >> the woman's name has not been released. a spokesman for the sheriff's department tells us it's going to be up to the coroner to determine whether the woman's death was a homicide. we're told that could take a couple of days. hayward police looking for witnesses in the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man saturday night. police say they found the man's body in the driveway of the home on franklin avenue between culp avenue and harder road 10:00 last night. the victim was taken to eden medical center for treatment but died this morning. no suspects identified at this time. police say it's amazing no one was killed when someone fired multiple shots into a car full of people in san jose early this morning.

police say the shooting happened around 2:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the fiesta nightclub on monterey highway in south san jose. officers are investigating the possibility that an argument inside the club led to the gunfire outside. police have not released any information or description of the gunman. moving on without their all star. how the warriors are dealing with the loss of david lee. we're going to hear from the team. also -- >> check out the trail. see if i can make it. >> a new option for commuters in the south bay if you're willing to pedal or to walk. plus, why the faa is warning to travelers to expect delays at the nation's largest airport starting tomorrow.

the federal aviation administration as you can expect to see delays at the nationest largest airports starting tomorrow morning. officials say sequester cuts went into effect today. the delays are mainly the result of furloughing for air traffic controllers. they're now required to take one day off without pay for every ten days worked. the system worked smoothly today but wasn't that busy today. the real test will come tomorrow morning when the skies are more crowded. a new paved trail about seven miles long opened in san jose this weekend. the section of the guadalupe river trail connects the community of val viso to santa

fe. about half of them use the trail to fwet to work. that number of people on the trail expected to increase now that the path is paved. >> it gets kind of -- when i go over bumps or driveways like that, it's, like, you know, doesn't feel comfortable. i got to be on something smooth. plus, it's easy on me. we're about the same age. >> there you go. the new paved trail is about 11 miles long now. getting a head start on earth day. still ahead, how people are diving in to clean up the bay area. a surprising thing some volunteers may find when they get to work. a major blow to the warriors' postseason hopes. what the team is saying after losing their all star.

well, he waited nearly a decade for the chance to pay in the nba playoffs. now warriors' forward david lee will have to watch from the bench. the all star suffered a severe hip injury in game one of the series with the nuggets. nba bay area's lawrence scott is in denver with more on the injury. >> reporter: hey, thank you. after the warriors' game one loss here in denver on saturday, more bad news on sunday as the team learns they will be without all star forward david lee for the remainder of the playoffs. after waiting his entire eighth season nba career for his very first playoff appearance, david lee's first playoff game will be his final this year after completely tearing his right hip flexor in the game one loss to denver. >> it's just the toughest part. >> reporter: without one of the true good guys in the nba, the

warriors will draw upon the team unity that helped bring them this far. >> you know, it's a team game. you know, being without our all star, captain, a leader, it's definitely going to, you know, hurt a little bit. but we got guys on the team that can step up and make plays. >> it's going to be tough to replace what david does for us. he's a great leader. but we can't be an excuse basketball team. got to go out and play. >> the season is far from over. we have to come out game two with the same mentality. 48-minute effort focusing on our game plan and being disciplined. and really capitalizing on the chance to go home 1-1. >> one more practice day on monday. warriors take on nuggets in game two of this series tuesday. much more to come from here in denver. let's send it back to you in the bay area. earth day is tomorrow. events popped up all across the bay area today and yesterday, too. that includes a very thorough cleanup effort in san francisco. >> in celebration of the big day, aquarium of the bay hosted a beach cleanup at aquatic park. while volunteers cleaned up the beach, of course, and

surrounding areas, divers from aquarium of the bay went under water to pull trash out of it. they expect to pull up many of the same things they found last year. >> it was really unique. i'll be anxious to see what they find this time. we found bottles last year. we found people have gone down there and brought up, like, tires and sinks. last year i found a couple crowbars. so it's things that i think come off of a lot of the ships, too. >> also on earth day, a ban of most plastic shopping bags in most cities across san mateo county. that starts tomorrow. the cherry blossoms are blooming in san francisco's japan town. nbc areas mike inouye. he looks good. he emceed the senior appreciation brunch honoring japanese-american seniors who've made a difference in their community. there was also a parade as you can see. the 46th annual. more than 1,500 people participated on this beautiful day. >> beautiful day.

tomorrow might be saying a little too hot. >> no. >> yeah. >> no. >> you know who says that? anthony slaughter. >> me and diane are in that boat. we like it warm. let's go to the beach. it's beautiful weather. it's a good thing with the bay area we don't have the humidity to deal with. that really makes it feel nice outside. in fact, tomorrow it is going to get a little warmer. in fact, plenty of upper 80s today. tomorrow expecting a few low 90s in livermore, even santa rosa expected to get near 90. that will break the old record. on the right hand column a lot of numbers lower than what we're forecasting tomorrow. hayward expected to get to 81. old record of 78. longest standing record here, oakland at 82. in fact, that record was set back in 1966. this heat that's headed our way for tomorrow is going to break some long standing record across the bay area. at the coast tomorrow starting at 61. topping out near 77. inland not going to cool off a whole lot tonight. back to 61. tomorrow really going to be hot.

92 for the inland valleys. right now 84 in santa rosa. 84 in concord. 74 in oakland. ocean breeze keeping it cool now in san francisco. down in san jose right now, 79 degrees. very warm over the last couple of days. each and every day it's gotten a little warmer because of the large area of high pressure. our winds have shifted around it. they're more of an offshore wind. that's allowing for sinking air which also warms as it sinks. that's why we're incredibly so warm across the bay area at least for today and tomorrow. the east and the south bay will start to see the air quality suffer. every else should be good. we haven't had too many spare the air dates here across the past couple of weeks. 53 to start in santa rosa. 56 in san rafael. oakland starts out in 57. everybody starts with clear skies and really lots of blue skies expected for tomorrow. winds light out of the north. 83 in santa cruz. 90 in loes gatos. 92 in morgan hill, 92 in gilroy.

hayward, 81. alameda, 80. closer to the water still a very nice 78 in san francisco. oakland at 86 tomorrow. berkeley, 84. up in wine country definitely talking about 90s. tomorrow going to be our record breaking day across the bay area. we see a little relief for tuesday but not a whole lot. that major relief starting to come wednesday and thursday. we'll get more of an onshore flow. that natural ac cools the bay. temperatures will cool from places in the 90s. tomorrow back in the 70s. temperatures become a little more tolerable. thursday a when it gets this warm, you can always head to the beach. >> tolerable? 90 is just perfect. >> gilroy. >> i love the heat. you know. >> there are folks who don't. we all have different opinions. thanks, anthony. back in a moment with the two words that seem to be bringing the people of boston together.

thousands of runners at today's london marathon started the race paying tribute to the victims of the boston bombings. the nearly 40,000 runners stood in silence before the start of the race in honor of the victims. mark cliggit from seattle was among today's runners as he was. he was a runner at the boston marathon. he said the london marathon was a wonderful experience but last week's tragedy was not far from my mind. >> last monday my wife and i were about 200 yards from the

finish at boston. you know, the world fell apart in front of us. the second explosion is probably 100 yards, 100 meters ahead of us. it got very scary for a little while. >> organizers at the london marathon say they beefed up security for today's event, but police are downplaying the extra security saying the city is safe and the extra security was not in response to a specific threat. the words boston strong have become somewhat of a rallying cry in the aftermath of the bombings. people at yesterday's red sox game waved signs of the phrase. when public address announcer said we are strong, we are boston, we are boston strong, the crowd erupted in cheers. the hashtag boston strong was a trending topic on twitter for much of last week as well. since monday it has been mentioned on twitter nearly half a million times and counting. >> i had a chance to be back there this week for the aftermath of the tragedy. and boston strong sums it up. what an amazing, amazing group of people all over the greater boston metro area.

the golden state warriors fell to the denver nuggets in a tightly contested game last night. today the w's found out they lost more than just the game. we're talking about taifd lee, of course. the forward suffered a torn hip flexor after going down hard on

a foul. lee is the team's first all star in 15 seasons and will miss the remainder of the playoffs. head coach mark jackson now on the loss. >> we can't replace him. and we know that. that's the thing we have to know right away. he's an all-star power forward who's had an incredible year. tough loss for us. and disappointing. hurt for him. but we move on. >> padres visiting at&t. this little girl got angel pa n pagan's autograph. he drove in two runs today as did buster posey. that is his first home run of 2013. he didn't even have one this spring. four strikeouts for vito over seven shutout innings.

amy gutierrez has more. >> the question of the day was could barry vito bounce back after a rough start in milwaukee where he gave up nine runs and was pulled after 2 2/3 innings. barry answered today with a resounding yes, given the giants seven shutout innings and leading to an eventual sweep over the padres. barry vito has not allowed a run in three of his four starts. >> you got to have a short-term memory in this game. we talk about it all the time. you know, if you let games bleed into the next one, that's when things go bad. you stick with your approach. >> what was working for you today? >> my change-up was a lot better today. just the command of my off speed was better. which, you know, made things better. >> great job on barry's part bouncing back and throwing such a great game. you have to be resilient in this game, and, you know, he's a pro. he put that game behind him. again, he felt like he threw well. he had good command today, made
